So Donald Trump has announced that to pay for building a wall on the Mexican border, he wants to impose a 20% tax on all Mexican imports. This is Donald Trump crossing a very bold and dangerous line less than week into his presidency. Here are three reasons it’s a bad idea:
American consumers will suffer
The result of a 20% tax on Mexican Imports will not only be the possibility of Mexican companies making less money, but also American Consumers paying more as prices increase to deal with the taxes. Taxation results in less money for people to spend on their families and communities, which will result in hurting the US economy unnecessarily.
Illegal immigration will increase
Any damage to the Mexican economy will only increase the demand for immigration and result in an increase of illegal immigration. If we want to truly decrease illegal immigration, we should be looking at our policies that hurt economies abroad (the drug war, trade policy, and regime change) and look at our processes for immigrating legally.
It will isolate us from the rest of the world, to our detriment
By burning bridges with Mexico, we open up Mexico to becoming more friendly with and dependent on other countries. This will likely not be in Americans’ best interest, and if this trend continues, we may find ourselves having very few friends when we truly need it.
While we should always hope for the best, we should always be vigilant and not silent when bad policy is afoot.
